Best Hikes in Malta for Meeting People
ClassifiedMalta · 5 min read · 20 August 2026
Malta is 27km long. You'd think that rules out serious hiking, but the coastline routes pack in more scenery per kilometre than most places twice the size. Group hikes are also one of the easiest ways to meet people — nobody's staring at their phone, there's a shared goal, and conversation happens without anyone having to force it.
Here are the seven routes worth lacing up for.
1. Dingli Cliffs to Ta' Zuta
The classic. Roughly 5km along Malta's highest cliffs, with sweeping views out to Filfla island. Flat enough for beginners, dramatic enough that nobody's bored. Best done in the morning before the sun gets high.
2. Riviera Bay to Golden Bay coastal walk
A shorter, easier walk (around 3km) that hugs the coast between two of Malta's best beaches. Perfect if your group wants to end with a swim — bring a costume.
3. Victoria Lines
A historic fortification line stretching across the island's width. Sections near Bingemma and Naxxar give you ruins, countryside, and genuinely quiet trails — good for a group that wants to actually talk without dodging tourists.
4. Wied il-Għasri, Gozo
A short but stunning descent into a narrow sea inlet on Gozo. Take the ferry over as a group and make a full day of it — the walk itself is only 20 minutes each way, but the setting is unmatched.
5. Buskett Gardens to Verdala Palace
Malta's only real woodland. Shaded, cooler than the coastal routes, and a nice option in summer when the cliffs get brutal by midday. Easy enough for a relaxed group pace.
6. Fomm ir-Riħ
Remote, harder to reach (you'll want a car or a lift), and one of the most unspoiled bays on the island. Worth it for a group that wants a proper adventure and doesn't mind a rougher path down.
7. Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs, Gozo
Gozo's answer to Dingli, and arguably more dramatic. Fewer people, longer views, and a genuinely good spot to end the walk with a picnic.
Why hiking works for meeting people
Unlike a bar or a dinner, a hike gives everyone something to do with their hands and eyes that isn't each other — which paradoxically makes conversation easier, not harder. Pace naturally pairs people off for stretches, then regroups. Nobody's cornered, and nobody has to perform.
It also filters for people who are genuinely up for something active, which tends to mean a more relaxed, less try-hard group overall.
Planning one
Most of these are doable solo, but they're far better with a small group — 3 to 6 people is the sweet spot. Post your hike on ClassifiedMalta's Experiences category, set the meeting point and time, and let people who are actually free that day join in. Every poster and joiner is at least Tier 1 verified, so you know who's showing up.
