Why We Verify Every Dating Profile on ClassifiedMalta

Most dating and social apps make identity verification optional, or skip it entirely. It's an easy design decision to justify: verification adds friction, friction reduces signups, and signups are the metric that usually matters most in the early days of a platform.

We made the opposite call for Dating on ClassifiedMalta, and we think it's worth explaining why.

The problem with optional verification

When verification is optional, it becomes a signal rather than a standard — a small percentage of extra-cautious users opt in, everyone else doesn't, and the platform ends up with a mix of verified and completely anonymous profiles sitting side by side. That mix is worse than either extreme: it gives verified users a false sense that the platform overall is safer than it actually is, while doing nothing to filter out the fake or bad-faith accounts that opting out was designed to hide.

What we actually require

ClassifiedMalta uses a tiered system:

• Tier 0 — browsing only, no verification.
• Tier 1 (Light) — confirmed email, confirmed phone number via SMS, self-declared 18+. Required to post in Experiences, Sea & Water, Food & Drinks, and Nightlife. This takes under a minute and filters out bots and throwaway accounts without requiring documents.
• Tier 2 (Full) — everything in Tier 1, plus a government ID and a live selfie match. Required for every single profile in the Dating category, no exceptions.

There is no way to post or respond in Dating without completing Tier 2. Not a paid bypass, not a "verified later" workaround. This was a deliberate product decision, not a technical limitation.

Why Dating specifically gets the higher bar

Dating carries different stakes than a group hike or a boat trip. It typically involves one-on-one meetings, often between people who've exchanged relatively little information beforehand, and it's the category most targeted by catfishing, scams, and bad-faith actors on other platforms. The extra step of ID verification exists specifically to raise the cost of creating a fake or malicious dating profile — not eliminate the possibility entirely, since nothing can, but make it meaningfully harder than it is on platforms that don't require it.

What verification does — and doesn't — guarantee

We're direct about this with every new user: verification confirms someone is a real, of-age, accountable person. It does not vouch for their character, their intentions on a given night, or how a date will go. Nothing can promise that. What it does is remove the anonymous layer that makes bad behaviour consequence-free — a verified user who behaves badly can be reported, reviewed, and if necessary permanently banned and blacklisted from re-registering, because we know who they actually are.

The friction was worth it

Requiring full ID verification for Dating does cost us some signups — some people decide the extra step isn't worth it and leave. We think that's the right trade. The people who complete it are demonstrating, before they've posted a single thing, that they're willing to be accountable for their behaviour on the platform. That's a meaningfully different starting point than an app where anyone with a working email address can start messaging strangers within thirty seconds.

Malta is small. Word travels. We'd rather build slower with a platform people actually trust than faster with one they don't.
